What is Yoga?

Yoga is said to have originated in India about 26,000 years ago. Translated from Sanskrit (the ancient language of India), the word yoga means “to control”, “to yoke”, or “to unite”. The union is between the self and the spirit. Yoga can mean many different things to different people.  It can even change as you progress in your practice.  Did you know that the modern day yoga mat didn’t make an appearance until the 1960’s?  People use pieces of cloth or rugs to sit on.  It didn’t evolve until the practice of meditation progressed into more strenuous poses.  My point with this is, if you try one type of yoga class and it doesn’t resonate with you try a different one.  There are many styles of yoga to fit your needs at the current place in time.

What are the benefits of Yoga?

Physical
• Increased flexibility
• Increased strength
• Increased balance
• Increased stamina
• Improved body alignment/ protection from injury

Mental
• Stress reduction
• Increased body awareness
• Better sleep
• Relaxation
• Calms and centers the nervous system

True yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life.  Yoga is not to be performed; yoga is to be lived. Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been; yoga cares about the person you are becoming.  Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose, and for it to be truly called yoga, its essence must be embodied.
